For years, I used PhotoSync to send my iPhone photos to OneDrive and Google Drive. My Microsoft 365 subscription included 1TB of OneDrive storage, so the arrangement felt generous and safe.
It was not the first time cloud storage had arrived as part of something else. When I used Google Fiber, my internet service came with a large amount of Google cloud storage. After I moved and canceled the internet service, that storage benefit disappeared too.
Later, I canceled Microsoft 365—and lost the 1TB OneDrive allowance that had made my second photo routine possible.
I did not lose my photos in one dramatic afternoon. Nothing flashed across the screen to announce that my safety net had changed. Two useful storage benefits simply ended when I stopped paying for the services attached to them, and I no longer had a backup routine I could explain with confidence.
That is an uncomfortable distinction. Seeing thousands of pictures on a phone—or seeing them inside a cloud app—does not necessarily mean I have an independent backup.
When my phone or cloud account says storage full, the urgent question is not only where to buy more space. It is whether the photos I can see are synchronized copies or a backup I could actually recover.
The short answer
If you use iCloud Photos, your full-resolution originals can be stored in iCloud while smaller, space-saving versions remain on your iPhone. That is useful. But iCloud Photos is primarily a synchronized photo library: delete a photo on one connected device, and it is also deleted from the others.
Google Photos can behave similarly when Backup is turned on. OneDrive Camera Upload, by contrast, is described by Microsoft as a one-way upload on iOS. A photo already uploaded to OneDrive normally remains there when I delete the phone copy.
So I no longer ask only, “Is cloud backup turned on?” I ask three questions:
- If I delete this photo from my phone, what else deletes it?
- Is the cloud copy the original quality?
- What happens if I cancel the plan or exceed its storage limit?
If I cannot answer all three, my backup status is unclear.
Sync, upload, and backup are not the same thing
These words are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not.
Three arrangements that look similar—until you delete something
The cloud icon alone does not tell you which arrangement you have.
Sync
One live library follows you across devices. Edits—and deletions—can travel with it.
One-way upload
A separate copy is sent elsewhere. The exact delete behavior still depends on the app and settings.
Independent backup
A separate recoverable copy is insulated from everyday library changes—and has been restore-tested.
Important: Verify your service’s current instructions with one unimportant photo before changing or deleting a real library.
Sync keeps one photo library consistent across devices. A change in one place—including a deletion—can travel everywhere.
One-way upload sends a separate copy from the phone to another service. Deleting the phone copy usually does not delete the uploaded copy, although the app’s settings still need to be checked.
Independent backup is a recoverable copy that is not easily altered by my ordinary use of the photo library. It may live on another cloud service, a computer, an external drive, or a properly designed NAS backup.
iCloud Photos is excellent at the first job. That does not automatically make it the only copy I should keep.
The delete button matters more than the cloud logo
Here is the beginner version of what happens with common services.
iCloud Photos

- Deleting the OneDrive copy normally does not erase the iPhone Camera Roll copy.

Apple gives deleted iCloud Photos a 30-day Recently Deleted window in normal circumstances. Google says backed-up items remain in its trash for 60 days. Those recovery windows are helpful, but they are not a reason to depend on synchronized deletion forever.
There is one extra iCloud warning worth knowing: Apple says that if the account is over its iCloud storage limit, deleted photos and videos may be removed immediately rather than staying available in Recently Deleted.
Does cloud backup reduce photo or video quality?
Sometimes. The answer lives in the settings, not in the brand name.
With Optimize iPhone Storage, iCloud keeps full-resolution originals in iCloud while the phone may retain smaller versions that use less local space. The original is not supposed to be downgraded in iCloud. The smaller version is on the phone until the original is needed and downloaded.
Google Photos offers Original quality and Storage saver. Original quality stores the same resolution. Storage saver may compress photos and videos, and larger photos can be resized. That can be a reasonable tradeoff, but it should be a conscious choice.
Dropbox supports modern iPhone HEIF photos and HEVC videos, but it also offers conversion options. Converting HEIF to JPEG can make files easier to open elsewhere, yet it means the uploaded file is not the untouched original format.
PhotoSync can also transfer, convert, rename, or organize files in different ways. Before I use it again, I need to inspect the transfer quality and deletion settings rather than trusting the fact that I used it years ago.
And sending photos through text messages or social apps? That is sharing, not a photo-backup plan. Those apps may compress the files, strip information, or make old media difficult to retrieve.
What the common options cost
These are current U.S. prices I checked on August 29, 2026. Plans change, promotional prices expire, and storage may be shared with email or other files.

Amazon Photos deserves one caution. “Unlimited photos” does not mean unlimited video, and it depends on keeping an eligible Prime membership. Amazon says an account that remains over quota after losing eligibility can eventually have files deleted after notices. I would treat it as a valuable second destination for photos—not as permission to forget where every other copy lives.
iCloud vs Google Photos—and the other options
One question I kept seeing in reader discussions was, “Does anyone use both iCloud and Google Photos?” Yes, many people do—but using both does not automatically create an independent backup. The result depends on which app uploads the files, which delete command is used, and whether both services still contain the original-quality copy.
I do not think there is one winner for everyone.
If I want the simplest iPhone experience, iCloud Photos is hard to beat. I would still want another independent copy because synchronized convenience also synchronizes mistakes.
If I already pay for Amazon Prime, Amazon Photos is difficult to ignore for full-resolution still photos. The 5GB video limit makes it incomplete for anyone who records a lot of family video.
If I need Word, Excel, or the rest of Microsoft 365 anyway, the included 1TB OneDrive storage can be good value. Canceling Office solely to save money may also mean replacing that storage somewhere else—as I discovered.
Google Photos remains a real, active service. What ended years ago was its broadly available free unlimited-storage offer, not Google Photos itself. Its search and sharing are useful, but I would learn the deletion controls before using it as the only home for my pictures.
Dropbox is still active and widely used, but its 2GB free plan is too small for a modern phone library. It makes more sense for someone already paying for Dropbox or needing cross-platform file sync.
My backup plan is not finished yet

I am not going to pretend I solved this simply by comparing price tables.
I still need to decide which cloud service will hold my live photo library, which destination will keep an independent copy, and how often I will verify that new photos actually arrived. A backup that quietly stopped six months ago is only a memory of a backup.
I have also used a 2TB Synology network-attached storage device (NAS)—a small storage computer connected to my home network—for years, and it is now almost full. I cannot leave this as a someday project. I need to decide soon whether to add an expansion unit, replace the existing hard drives with larger ones, or start paying for enough cloud storage to hold the growing library.
Those choices solve different problems. Larger drives or an expansion unit would give me more local capacity, but the NAS would still need another copy somewhere else. Cloud storage would give me an off-site copy and avoid a hardware migration, but it creates a continuing bill—and I have already learned twice that storage bundled with another subscription can disappear when the subscription does.
The cheapest-looking option is therefore not automatically the safest or least expensive. I need to compare the upfront hardware cost, several years of cloud fees, available capacity, upload time, and what happens when either the NAS or subscription fails.
Storage Runway & 3-Year Cost Check
Use your own rough numbers. This compares capacity and cash—not reliability, convenience, or whether you have a true second copy.
At this growth rate, the current storage fills soon. The NAS upgrade buys more local room; cloud adds an off-site destination. Neither result proves you have a backup unless another recoverable copy exists.
Estimate only. It excludes taxes, electricity, RAID/SHR overhead, replacement drives, price changes, upload speed, recovery work, and the value of software or support. Values stay in your browser and are not stored.
How the estimate works
Runway = remaining GB ÷ monthly growth. Three-year cloud cost = monthly price × 36. Cash difference compares that result with the entered NAS upgrade cost. Capacity after upgrade is checked against three years of estimated growth.
Worksheet: subtract used TB from usable TB, multiply by 1,000, then divide by monthly growth in GB. Multiply cloud monthly cost by 36 and compare it with the NAS upgrade cost.
That decision deserves its own article. A NAS gives me another place to store photos, but owning one does not automatically mean every photo is safely backed up. I want to compare expansion costs, larger drives, migration, off-site copies, and several years of cloud fees using my actual Synology model and storage growth—not a generic “NAS versus cloud” verdict.
For now, this is the five-minute check I am doing:
- Open the cloud app and find one photo taken today.
- Find one older photo and confirm its date and resolution.
- Check whether videos are included, not only photos.
- Read the service’s deletion behavior before removing anything.
- Confirm what happens when the subscription ends or storage fills up.
Then I will test recovery with one unimportant photo. Upload it, remove it from one location, and see exactly what changes. I would rather learn with a picture of a grocery receipt than with the only video of a family moment.
The simplest version of the reader question is, “If I delete on one, what happens?” Do you know what happens when you delete a photo from your phone—and what happens when you delete it from the cloud? If you had to pause before answering, your photos may be synchronized. They may even be stored in several places. But you have not yet proved they are backed up.
